The best lines to measure temperatures, velocities and magnetic fields in the solar photosphere
An analytical and numerical study of the sensitivity of weak solar photospheric lines to temperatures, velocities, and magnetic fields has been developed. Our investigation is based on the concept of response functions (Ruiz Cobo & del Toro Iniesta 1994). Lines commonly used in solar spectropolarimetry, like Fe I at 630.25 nm in the visible and Fe I 1564.8 nm in the infrared, are examined in detail as emerging from reference quiet Sun and...

The lighthouses and deserts of the Universe (Structure formation from galaxy clusters to voids)
According to the hierarchical scenario, galaxies form in dark matter halos which grow via merging and accretion of small objects. Using new N-body simulations with very high mass and force resolution we study the clustering of dark matter halos hosting galaxies in LCDM cosmology with Omega = 0.3. We follow the evolution of halos which end up in such different cosmological environment as the high density environment of clusters and the low...

The nature of the extreme kinematics in distant radio galaxies
The goal of this project is to investigate the kinematics of the ionized gas in High Redshift Radio Galaxies. In particular to consider if the extreme gas motions can be explained by simple gravitational motion models. 2D spectral maps are also being used to further investigate kinematics in these objects.

Gauge theory of gravity, lagrangian formalism on jet-gauge and jet-diffeomorphism groups: towards a unification with internal gauge interactions.
The geometrical formulation that describes the gauge interactions associated with internal symmetries is extended, with very little deviation from the standard viewpoint, to the case in which the symmetry group acts also on the space-time manifold. As a natural example we study the gravitational interaction recovering the Hilbert-Einstein theory. We also attempt to a simple, yet non trivial, mixing of gravity and electromagnetism (or more...

Venus: the forgotten planet
Venus, a planet with loads of visitors between 1961 and 1983, was practically abandoned by the scientific communities of both East and West as soon as it became clear that its inhospitable atmosphere and suffocating temperatures were incapable of sustaining life of any form. With a last effort to map its surface in 1990, Venus was soon to be left behind in the list of scientific priorities with basic questions about the origins of its atmosphere...

Galaxy Evolution in COMBO-17 and GEMS
I present two new surveys and some of their results on galaxy evolution. COMBO-17 is a 17-band optical imaging survey which provides photometric redshifts of extremely high accuracy for 40,000 galaxies and 500 QSOs. GEMS is the largest HST colour mosaic and covers 1/4 of COMBO-17. With COMBO-17 we have quantified how differently red and blue galaxies have evolved from redshift 1 until today. GEMS demonstrates how disks have lost surface...

Clusters of galaxies in X-rays: Distribution of baryonic and non-baryonic matter.
Clusters of galaxies consist of various components: galaxies, dark matter, intra-cluster gas, magnetic fields etc. Interaction of the different component yields important information on physical quantities like e.g. the pressure, the energy or the strength of the magnetic field. The knowledge about these quantities enables us to understand cluster formation as well as physical processes in clusters - both important steps to use clusters as...

X-Ray Bubbles
Central stars of planetary nebulae and Wolf-Rayet stars have energetic fast stellar winds, with velocities easily >1,000 km/s. These winds sweep up the material around the star ejected in previous phases of the stellar evolution and blow circumstellar bubbles. Similarly, the combined wind of young, pre-supernova OB associations blows a bubble. In the interaction between the fast stellar wind and the circumstellar material, the fast wind is...

Differential rotation in intermediate mass stars
Rotation constitutes an important element to take into account when modelling A type and hotter Main Sequence stars. Nowadays, despite the progress made in the treatment of rotation, it remains a significant problem for the analysis of observations from this kind of stars.
We will review the evidence for phenomenological diversity among the broad-line emitting AGN that highlights the need for such a diagram. In other words, all quasars are not alike. We will then introduce a 4D parameter space that we call Eigenvector 1 which appears to provide optimal phenomenological discrimination between the major classes of AGN...

It is proposed to explore the interaction of weak gravitational fields with slender elastic materials in order to assess the viability of achieving enhanced laser interferometric sensitivities for the detection of gravitational waves with frequencies between 1e-4 and 1 Hz. The aim is the design of novel gravitational antennae in interplanetary orbit. The implementation of these ideas would be complimentary to existing programmes of gravitational...

Molecular outflows in high-mass star-forming regions: the extreme case of IRAS 20126+4104
As part of an outflow study in high-mass star-forming regions we observed the outflow in 20126+4104. It molecular outflow shows extremely high-velocity gas that extends in velocity more than +/- 50 km/s from the LSR. Comparing the different velocity components with the previously observed SiO jet, we found different orientation between the jet and the outflow that we interpret due to a precessing jet. The energetic of the outflow and it effects...

The Legacy of the HST for Studies of Stellar Populations in the Local Group
Over the past 10 years, most of the galaxies in the Local Group have been observed by the HST for the purpose of studying their stellar populations. I will present a summary of some of these observations, and describe some of the key scientific questions that have been addressed with these data. I will focus on the issue of derived star formation histories of Local Group galaxies, giving my perspective of the important issues, some of the...

Afterglows of gamma-ray bursts
Ever since the first fading counterpart of Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) was discovered in 1997 there had been tremendous progress in our understanding of GRBs both in observation and theory. In this talk I will summarize the various aspects we learnt from multi-band observations of GRBs as well as the open issues. I will mention the contribution fron Indian observatories and particularly the observations I carried out at Vainu.

The feeding of monsters - a study of nearby active galaxies
The understanding of the nature of AGNs and the galaxies hosting them belongs to one of the most interesting topics of modern astrophysical research. Especially the fueling mechanisms of the central black hole - supposed to be responsible for the enormous activity in these objects - raise a wealth of unanswered questions. The so called NUGA (NUclei of GAlaxies) survey an international collaboration and the Cologne Nearby QSO sample aim at...
