From Geometry to Numerics: a perspective from Gravitational Wave astrophysics
The study of astrophysical sources of gravitational radiation relies on the “isolated body” notion in General Relativity. Here we discuss some of the conceptual and “practical” issues in the geometric characterization and numerical modeling of these systems, with an emphasis on the astrophysical perspective. This discussion summarizes, from an astrophysicist's point of view, a more extended analysis developed by the...

Density field, environments and environmental properties of the 10k zCOSMOS galaxies
zCOSMOS is a large redshift survey (0<z<3) undertaken in the 2 squared degree COSMOS field. One of the major goals of the zCOSMOS survey is to reconstruct the environments of galaxies ranging from the 100 kpc to the 100 Mpc scale. I will present the zCOSMOS survey and some of the scientific results obtained using the current ~10000 accurate zCOSMOS redshifts out to z~1. First, I will introduce the zCOSMOS 3-d density field and the new...

New radiative transfer diagnostic techniques: from proto-planetary disks to the Sun
Radiative transfer is a fundamental tool for the analysis of astronomical observations. Although the theoretical foundations of the basic problem of radiative transfer are widely known, we still witness improvements in the tools used to solve the equations. Furthermore, polarized radiative transfer is becoming of great interest due to the availability of very sensitive spectro-polarimeters. In this seminar I discuss some recent advances that we...

Millimeter observations of debris disks around solar-type stars
Tracing the evolution of debris discs is essential for our understanding of planetary system architecture. While the evolution of their inner discs has been recently studied with Spitzer at the infrared wavelengths, the outer discs can be best characterized by sensitive (sub)millimeter observations. Two deep surveys of circumstellar discs around solar-type stars at different ages were carried at 350micron with CSO and at 1.2mm with IRAM. The...

Evolution and dispersal of protoplanetary disks
Multiwavelength studies of evolved protoplanetary disks reveal a general trend of changes in the IR excesses, accretion rates, and silicate features, suggestinggrain growth/settling, photoevaporation, and maybe the formation of planets and planetesimals. Nevertheless, within the average-behaviour picture of disk evolution, we observe strong variations between individuals, that may be related to different initial conditions, different...

Footprints of hierarchical thermal fragmentation in the star forming cluster NGC 2264
To fully understand how molecular clouds survive long enough to sustain multiple star forming epochs it is essential to know in detail their star forming histories. NGC2264 is one of the classical star forming regions, first studied by Walker in 1965 who discovered its pre-main sequence (PMS) population. We re-visit the region with the Spitzer Space telescope to study in detail its PMS sources in terms of circumstellar disk evolution and age...

A 'diamond-ring' star: the enigmatic morphology of a young (multiple?) object
Research in Astronomy is sometimes compared with the activity of a detective, trying to solve a crime scene. This is the case we were faced with when we discovered an enigmatic astronomical source. The discovery took place during our effort to put together a catalog of IRAS-based protostars. We found that IRAS PSC 06468-0325 exhibits extended emission with very unusual and enigmatic morphology: that of a diamond-ring, that is, a ring or torus...

How to publish a paper in Nature
Nature is one of the world's leading scientific journals, publishing many papers that receive wide attention by the general public. But, Nature is very selective-- <7% of submitted papers are published. Theory papers pose additional problems, as we want only those papers that are likely to be the...

AGN: the XMM-Newton (and Chandra) legacy
In this talk I will review the constraints on the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) structure model emerging from X-ray studies of nearby Seyfert galaxies. In other fields, such as the distribution of gas in the nuclear environment, or...

Scattered-light echoes: a cosmic stealth radar
Scattered light echoes offer one of the most effective means to probe the structure and composition of circumtellar and interstellar media. Of note, light echoes provide exact three-dimensional positions of scattering dust. However, they are also very rare, and have only been unambiguously resolved around a handful of sources. I will discuss the history of light echo astronomy, and how they can be used to study the environments around variable...

Challenges of standard solar chromospheric models
The core emission of the Ca II H and K lines are one of the important sources of the radiative loss in the solar chromosphere. The H-index is the integrated emission in a 0.1 nm band around the Ca II H line core. We observed a variety of calcium spectra with drastic differences in the emission properties in the core and wing. Ratio of the maximum H-index to the minimum H-index is over 3. There are also "absorption" profiles with no...

Multi-wavelength emission and accretion physics in Low Luminosity Active Nuclei
Accretion of matter onto a super massive black hole (SMBH) is believed to be the dominant mechanism for the emission production in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Whether low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) are a scaled-down luminosity version of classical AGN or objects powered by different physical mechanism is a debated issue. LLAGN could indeed represent scaled up versions of black hole binaries in the steady-jet, hard X-ray state, as pointed out by...

Physics and observational signatures of the first stars and the epoch of reionization
The physics of the formation of first stars will be reviewed. The first stars formed in the first dark matter halos where gas was able to cool through molecular hydrogen lines. They were metal-free and highly massive, and produced HII regions which ionized and evaporated their entire host halos starting the process of reionization. They probably also formed the first black holes, which may have grown to the massive nuclear black holes that gave...

Different Methods of Forming Cold Fronts in Galaxy Clusters and Their impact on the Dynamics of the Intracluster Gas
One of the most interesting features discovered by Chandra satellite observations of galaxy clusters are the sharp X-ray surface brightness discontinuities, accompanied by jumps in gas temperature named “cold fronts”. The temperature and density jumps happen in such a way as to maintain the gas pressure continuously across the front and, therefore, they are not created by shocks. They were originally interpreted as being the result...

Transient Luminous Discharges (TLD) produced in the mesosphere and lower ionosphere of the Earth: impact on the ozone chemistry
Transient Luminous Discharges (TLD) are large scale optical events taking place at stratospheric and mesospheric/lower ionospheric altitudes (40 – 90 Km), which are directly connected to the electrical activity in underlying thunderstorms. The possibility of these phenomena was first predicted in 1925 by the Nobel Prize winner C. T. R. Wilson. However, the first image of one TLD was only captured by chance in the USA in 1989.

Starbursts in Radio Galaxies from z=0 to z=4
I present new results on the young stellar populations in powerful radio galaxies based both on optical spectroscopy and far-IR/sub-mm photometry (including recent Spitzer data). The results provide key information about the triggering of the AGN activity in major galaxy mergers, as well as resolving the long-standing mystery of the heating mechanism for the cool dust.

Multiband Modeling of Two Unusual GRB Afterglows: GRB 050319 (wind to ISM Transition in View ?) and GRB 050401 (another case for Double Jet)
GRB 050319 (z = 3.24) and GRB 050401 (z = 2.9) are long duration and distant GRBs. Their afterglows show unusual and interesting features. We have modeled these afterglows using Fireball Model. We show that GRB 050401 afterglow provides another case for 'Double Jet' at a redshift of 2.9. Afterglow of GRB 050319 shows a clear signature of "Wind-to-ISM transition" of circum-stellar medium which is an important high redshift testimony, of...

Dense Molecular Clouds and Star Formation in the Magellanic Clouds
Multiwavelenghts studies of massive star formation regions in the LMC and SMC reveal that a second generation of stars is being formed in dense molecular clouds located in the surroundings of the massive clusters. These dense molecular clouds have survive the action of massive star UV radiation fields and winds and they appear as compact dense H2 knots in regions of weak CO emission. Alternatively, we have found that large molecular clouds,...

Analysis tools for studying disk galaxies
I will present some recent results from two Integral Field Spectrographs (SAURON and GMOS-IFU) together with high resolution images from the Hubble Space Telescope, providing a unique data set for studying dynamics of galaxies. The main scientific focus will be on spiral galaxies, and the connection between their large-scale dynamics and nuclear activity. In particular, I will elaborate on the role of streaming along bars and spiral arms in this...

The Global Star Formation Law: from Dense Cores to Extreme Starbursts at High-z
Active star formation is tightly related to the dense molecular gas in the giant molecular cloud dense cores. HCN (measure of the dense molecular gas) survey of 65 galaxies (including 10 ultraluminous galaxies) reveals a tight linear correlation between HCN and IR (star formation rate) luminosities, whereas the correlation between IR and CO (measure of the total molecular gas) luminosities is nonlinear. This suggests that the global star...

Did Low Mass Stars Form from Primordial Gas?
I review theoretical arguments which suggest only high mass stars can form from primordial gas. But low-mass extremely metal poor stars do exist and so the question of whether they formed from primordial gas, and later accreted their metals from the interstellar medium, does arise. My talk concentrates on the molecular ions H3+ and HeH+, their role as electron donors and ongoing work to study the consequences for stellar evolution and star...

Dusty star-forming galaxies in the red sequence: the cluster Abell 901/902 seen with COMBO-17
It is well-established that clusters are dominated by red galaxies wirh old stellar populations, while the field population consists mostly of blue galaxies with younger stars. The origin of this relation may be due to 'nature' or 'nurture'. In the nurture scenario the transformation from blue to red could be due to a variety of processes. However, we only start to discover the smoking gun of this transformation today. The medium-band filter set...

Infrared Properties of Star Forming Dwarf Galaxies
Dwarf galaxies are the most common galaxies in the Universe. They are systems believed to consist of matter in a near-primordial state, from which giant galaxies probably form. As such, they are important probes for studying matter in its near-primordial state. In an effort to study the main physical and chemical properties of dwarfs, in my work two classes of star forming dwarf galaxies are considered: dwarf irregulars (dIs), and blue compact...

The decline in cosmic star formation since z~1: Major mergers or quiescient star formation?
It has been known for a long time, that the cosmic SFR has declined by 3-10 fold since redshift ~1. Since major mergers are effective triggers of star formation and have been more common in the past, it has been argued that the decline is driven by the merger evolution. Using data from COMBO-17 and GEMS we show that most star formation at z<1 takes place in quiesciently star-forming galaxies, while major mergers are only responsible for a...

Modeling Galaxy Clustering Through Cosmic Time
We employ high-resolution N-body simulations to model luminosity-dependent clustering from z=5 to z=0. We use a simple, non-parametric model which monotonically relates galaxy luminosities to the maximum circular velocity of dark matter halos in order to match the halos in simulations with observed galaxies. The simulations and our model predict the shape, amplitude, and luminosity dependence of the two-point correlation function in excellent...
