The Nordic Optical Telescope: Present and Future
The Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) has now been in successful operation on La Palma for 15 years. Great changes have taken place in Nordic and European astronomy during that time. Notably, ESO has commissioned the VLT, to which most Nordic astronomers now have access. NOT is also a partner in OPTICON, which is broadening the scope of European cooperation in optical/IR astronomy. Accordingly, the instrumentation and mode of operation of NOT are...

Astrophysical Bounds on Planck Suppressed Lorentz Violations
It is generally believed that Lorentz invariance is an exact symmetry of Nature. Together with the equivalence principle, local Lorentz invariance is one of the assumptions underpinning General Relativity. Several predictions from quantum gravity models have put in question the validity of Lorentz invariance at scales near the Planckian one. A major realization of recent years is that such violations/modifications of Lorentz invariance at high...

The Spanish Virtual Observatory
Although astronomical archives constitute a basic tool for modern Astrophysics as revealed by their intensive usage (in particular for multiwavelength astronomy), it is also true that the efficiency in the scientific exploitation of the available information is seriously limited by two major facts. Archives lack of a real interoperability among them. Methodological bottlenecks: The "classical" methods of retrieving and...

Black Hole Non-Formation in Braneworld
We begin by showing that a collapsing dust cloud with a central homogeneous core must have a faint atmosphere in the Brane-World, unlike the four-dimensional General Relativistic case, in which a pure vacuum exterior is allowed. Assuming a diagonal five dimensional metric, we then find the conditions for which the collapsing object generically "evaporates" during the collapse and we show that the emitted flux approaches the Hawking...

New methods for deriving cluster mass profiles and the cosmological parameters applied to deep ACS+Subaru+VLT observations
We show how to reliably identify the counter-images of resolved background sources lensed by galaxy clusters. Nearly all the faint objects lying inside the Einstein radius of A1689 have been matched up with their lensed counter-images in deep ACS observations, totaling 120 multiply-lensed images belonging to 37 background galaxies. Wide-field Subaru data allows the outer mass profile of A1689 to be derived by combining the lens magnification and...

Integral Field Spectroscopy observations of 3C 120, spectrum of the optical counter-part of the radio-jet and evidences of a past merging
We report on IFS observations of the nuclear regions of 3C 120, using INTEGRAL at the 4.2m WHT telescope. We propose new methods to deblend the spectra of the nucleus and the host galaxy based in 2D decompositions, and to extract the spectra of the substructures in complex systems. Using this method we obtained (a) the clean spectrum of the optical counter-part of the radio-jet of 3C 120, determining its nature (highly-ionized gas), (b) the...

The interplay between the radio activity and the ISM in radio galaxies
Radio-loud AGNs can inhabit regions with a very rich ISM. The presence of this rich medium is likely related to the origin and evolution of the host galaxy and of the active nucleus. Recent observations show that a large fraction of radio galaxies contains a significant young stellar population. This supports the idea that mergers are responsible for both the starburst phase and the triggering of the nuclear activity. The gas that reaches the...

The best lines to measure temperatures, velocities and magnetic fields in the solar photosphere
An analytical and numerical study of the sensitivity of weak solar photospheric lines to temperatures, velocities, and magnetic fields has been developed. Our investigation is based on the concept of response functions (Ruiz Cobo & del Toro Iniesta 1994). Lines commonly used in solar spectropolarimetry, like Fe I at 630.25 nm in the visible and Fe I 1564.8 nm in the infrared, are examined in detail as emerging from reference quiet Sun and...

The lighthouses and deserts of the Universe (Structure formation from galaxy clusters to voids)
According to the hierarchical scenario, galaxies form in dark matter halos which grow via merging and accretion of small objects. Using new N-body simulations with very high mass and force resolution we study the clustering of dark matter halos hosting galaxies in LCDM cosmology with Omega = 0.3. We follow the evolution of halos which end up in such different cosmological environment as the high density environment of clusters and the low...

Gauge theory of gravity, lagrangian formalism on jet-gauge and jet-diffeomorphism groups: towards a unification with internal gauge interactions.
The geometrical formulation that describes the gauge interactions associated with internal symmetries is extended, with very little deviation from the standard viewpoint, to the case in which the symmetry group acts also on the space-time manifold. As a natural example we study the gravitational interaction recovering the Hilbert-Einstein theory. We also attempt to a simple, yet non trivial, mixing of gravity and electromagnetism (or more...

Venus: the forgotten planet
Venus, a planet with loads of visitors between 1961 and 1983, was practically abandoned by the scientific communities of both East and West as soon as it became clear that its inhospitable atmosphere and suffocating temperatures were incapable of sustaining life of any form. With a last effort to map its surface in 1990, Venus was soon to be left behind in the list of scientific priorities with basic questions about the origins of its atmosphere...

Central stars of planetary nebulae and Wolf-Rayet stars have energetic fast stellar winds, with velocities easily >1,000 km/s. Similarly, the combined wind of young, pre-supernova OB associations blows a bubble. In the interaction between the fast stellar wind and the circumstellar material, the fast wind is...

How does one go about finding an H-R Diagram for Quasars? Does it make any sense to search for one? We will review the evidence for phenomenological diversity among the broad-line emitting AGN that highlights the need for such a diagram. In other words, all quasars are not alike. We will then introduce a 4D parameter space that we call Eigenvector 1 which appears to provide optimal phenomenological discrimination between the major classes of AGN...

Probing quantum gravity: Experimental tests of Lorentz and CPT symmetries
I review briefly theoretical reasons for possible violations of Lorentz and/or CPT symmetries in some models of quantum gravity. I then proceed to describe experimental tests, ranging from sensitive probes of quantum mechanics, like neutral kaons, and precision measurements in nuclear and atomic physics (clock comparison experiments) and antimatter factories (such as antihydrogen production at CERN), to astrophysical tests (gamma ray bursts etc...

Radio emission from supernovae
Observations of recently exploded radio supernovae -a few years to a few tens of years- allow us to obtain valuable information about the nature and evolutionary phase of the progenitor star in the period from a few hundred to several tens-of-thousands of years before its explosion. In particular, high resolution radio observations using very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) are the only ones that permit to trace the presupernova mass loss...

ACS observations of Abell 1689
A1689 is one of the most powerful gravitational lenses in the sky. In June 2002 we observed the center of A1689 with the ACS WFC for 20 orbits in the g,r,i,z bands, plus 3 orbits of grism observations. The resulting images are close to the depth of the HDFN over an area of 3.4'x3.4'. Combined with the magnification from the cluster, this offers an unprecedented view of the high redshift universe. The multicolor coverage, complemented with...

Physical conditions in luminous AGN
The phenomenon of active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been one of the most intriguing subjects of astrophysical studies in the past several decades. Radio astronomy and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) have played a crucial role in these studies, particularly in investigations of reltavistic outflows (jets) commonly observed in luminous AGN. For the past 30 years, radio interferometry has yielded an impressive amount of information about...

A Study of circumstellar interaction of Extragalactic Supernovae
Circumstellar interaction of the shocked ejecta gives rise to emission in radio and X-ray bands. Observations of young supernovae in these wave bands unravel the aspects of circumstellar interaction such as the mass loss rate from the pre-explosion progenitor star and the structure of the outer region of the supernova, between the blast wave shock and the reverse shock. I present here the observations of few young extragalactic supernovae...

Basic ingredients for the biggest blasts in the cosmos
There is now general agreement that gamma-ray bursts involve extraordinary power outputs, posing a severe theoretical challenge and - irrespective of which detailed model proves correct - involving some fascinating and extreme physical processes. I shall focus on some of the key issues relating the modeling of the trigger and the formation of the ultra relativistic outflow which has been proven to be a formidable challenge to computational...

Stellar population synthesis as an inverse problem. Application to nearby galaxies.
The problem of ``stellar population synthesis'' is to derive the stellar population of an unresolved stellar system using a database of stars or clusters. In this talk I will set out the two different approaches adopted since the 60s in order to solve this problem and will discuss the connected drawbacks. Then I will expose an inverse stellar population synthesis method that I developped with Didier Pelat from the ``Observatoire de Meudon'' (...

Metallicity in Photon Dominated Regions
Dense molecular ISM is the site of star formation. FUV radiation from hot stars heat the nearby molecular gas establishing a region called Photon Dominated Regions (PDRs), where the physical and the chemical processes are dominated by the FUV field. The UV radiation not only heats the molecular gas but also regulates the star formation process itself. In low metallicity systems, such as LMC, SMC and dwarf galaxies, a reduced number of dust...

A new H alpha survey of star formation in field spiral and irregular galaxies
I will discuss results from the recently-completed H-alpha Galaxy Survey (HaGS), which resulted in H alpha and broad-band R imaging of 334 star-forming galaxies out to 3000 km/s, selected as an unbiassed subset of the Uppsala Galaxy Catalogue. Initial results from this survey include measuring the type dependence of star formation activity, determination of the effect of the group environment on star formation, normalised to activity in isolated...

Molecular outflows in high-mass star-forming regions: the extreme case of IRAS 20126+4104
As part of an outflow study in high-mass star-forming regions we observed the outflow in 20126+4104. It molecular outflow shows extremely high-velocity gas that extends in velocity more than +/- 50 km/s from the LSR. Comparing the different velocity components with the previously observed SiO jet, we found different orientation between the jet and the outflow that we interpret due to a precessing jet. The energetic of the outflow and it effects...
