Extragalactic Stellar Astronomy
Evolved descendants of Main Sequence O-types stars, B- and A-type supergiant stars are among the most luminous "regular" objects in galaxies with recent star formation. Quantitative spectroscopy by means of efficient multi-object spectrographs attached to 10m-class telescopes and modern non-LTE model atmosphere techniques enable us to gather an unprecedented wealth of information on distant galaxies. In this talk, I will describe the...

AMIGA project: Quantification of the isolation of 950 CIG galaxies
The role of the environment on galaxy evolution is still not fully understood. In order to quantify and set limits on the role of nurture one must identify and study a sample of isolated galaxies. The AMIGA project "Analysis of the Interstellar Medium of Isolated GAlaxies" is doing a multi-wavelength study of a large sample of isolated galaxies in order to examine their interstellar medium and star formation activity. We processed 950...

Multi-wavelength emission and accretion physics in Low Luminosity Active Nuclei
Accretion of matter onto a super massive black hole (SMBH) is believed to be the dominant mechanism for the emission production in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Whether low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) are a scaled-down luminosity version of classical AGN or objects powered by different physical mechanism is a debated issue. LLAGN could indeed represent scaled up versions of black hole binaries in the steady-jet, hard X-ray state, as pointed out by...

The Halpha-toFUV flux ratio in a young star forming regions is an age sensitive quantify. If this quantify is measured for each pixel in an image of a face-on galaxy, it is possible to map the ages of star forming regions across the disk. To do this we compare the new release GALEX FUV images and extremely narrowband TTF Halpha images of a sample of nearby face-on spirals galaxies, using a pixel-to- pixel comparison method. The evolutionary...

Utilizando...

Physics and observational signatures of the first stars and the epoch of reionization
The physics of the formation of first stars will be reviewed. The first stars formed in the first dark matter halos where gas was able to cool through molecular hydrogen lines. They were metal-free and highly massive, and produced HII regions which ionized and evaporated their entire host halos starting the process of reionization. They probably also formed the first black holes, which may have grown to the massive nuclear black holes that gave...

Different Methods of Forming Cold Fronts in Galaxy Clusters and Their impact on the Dynamics of the Intracluster Gas
One of the most interesting features discovered by Chandra satellite observations of galaxy clusters are the sharp X-ray surface brightness discontinuities, accompanied by jumps in gas temperature named “cold fronts”. The temperature and density jumps happen in such a way as to maintain the gas pressure continuously across the front and, therefore, they are not created by shocks. They were originally interpreted as being the result...

Current mm-interferometers can provide a complete view of the distribution and kinematics of molecular gas in the circumnuclear disks of nearby galaxies. High-resolution CO maps are paramount in order to track down the feeding of active nuclei and quantitatively address the issue of how and for how long nuclear activity can be sustained in galaxies. Going beyond CO mapping, the use of more specific molecular tracers of dense gas can probe the...

Transient Luminous Discharges (TLD) produced in the mesosphere and lower ionosphere of the Earth: impact on the ozone chemistry
Transient Luminous Discharges (TLD) are large scale optical events taking place at stratospheric and mesospheric/lower ionospheric altitudes (40 – 90 Km), which are directly connected to the electrical activity in underlying thunderstorms. The possibility of these phenomena was first predicted in 1925 by the Nobel Prize winner C. T. R. Wilson. However, the first image of one TLD was only captured by chance in the USA in 1989. Since then,...

Starbursts in Radio Galaxies from z=0 to z=4
I present new results on the young stellar populations in powerful radio galaxies based both on optical spectroscopy and far-IR/sub-mm photometry (including recent Spitzer data). The results provide key information about the triggering of the AGN activity in major galaxy mergers, as well as resolving the long-standing mystery of the heating mechanism for the cool dust.

Multiband Modeling of Two Unusual GRB Afterglows: GRB 050319 (wind to ISM Transition in View ?) and GRB 050401 (another case for Double Jet)
GRB 050319 (z = 3.24) and GRB 050401 (z = 2.9) are long duration and distant GRBs. Their afterglows show unusual and interesting features. We have modeled these afterglows using Fireball Model. We show that GRB 050401 afterglow provides another case for 'Double Jet' at a redshift of 2.9. Afterglow of GRB 050319 shows a clear signature of "Wind-to-ISM transition" of circum-stellar medium which is an important high redshift testimony, of...

Dense Molecular Clouds and Star Formation in the Magellanic Clouds
Multiwavelenghts studies of massive star formation regions in the LMC and SMC reveal that a second generation of stars is being formed in dense molecular clouds located in the surroundings of the massive clusters. These dense molecular clouds have survive the action of massive star UV radiation fields and winds and they appear as compact dense H2 knots in regions of weak CO emission. Alternatively, we have found that large molecular clouds,...

The Global Star Formation Law: from Dense Cores to Extreme Starbursts at High-z
Active star formation is tightly related to the dense molecular gas in the giant molecular cloud dense cores. HCN (measure of the dense molecular gas) survey of 65 galaxies (including 10 ultraluminous galaxies) reveals a tight linear correlation between HCN and IR (star formation rate) luminosities, whereas the correlation between IR and CO (measure of the total molecular gas) luminosities is nonlinear. This suggests that the global star...

Did Low Mass Stars Form from Primordial Gas?
I review theoretical arguments which suggest only high mass stars can form from primordial gas. But low-mass extremely metal poor stars do exist and so the question of whether they formed from primordial gas, and later accreted their metals from the interstellar medium, does arise. My talk concentrates on the molecular ions H3+ and HeH+, their role as electron donors and ongoing work to study the consequences for stellar evolution and star...

Dusty star-forming galaxies in the red sequence: the cluster Abell 901/902 seen with COMBO-17
It is well-established that clusters are dominated by red galaxies wirh old stellar populations, while the field population consists mostly of blue galaxies with younger stars. The origin of this relation may be due to 'nature' or 'nurture'. In the nurture scenario the transformation from blue to red could be due to a variety of processes. However, we only start to discover the smoking gun of this transformation today. The medium-band filter set...

Infrared Properties of Star Forming Dwarf Galaxies
Dwarf galaxies are the most common galaxies in the Universe. They are systems believed to consist of matter in a near-primordial state, from which giant galaxies probably form. As such, they are important probes for studying matter in its near-primordial state. In an effort to study the main physical and chemical properties of dwarfs, in my work two classes of star forming dwarf galaxies are considered: dwarf irregulars (dIs), and blue compact...

The decline in cosmic star formation since z~1: Major mergers or quiescient star formation?
It has been known for a long time, that the cosmic SFR has declined by 3-10 fold since redshift ~1. Since major mergers are effective triggers of star formation and have been more common in the past, it has been argued that the decline is driven by the merger evolution. Using data from COMBO-17 and GEMS we show that most star formation at z<1 takes place in quiesciently star-forming galaxies, while major mergers are only responsible for a...

Modeling Galaxy Clustering Through Cosmic Time
We employ high-resolution N-body simulations to model luminosity-dependent clustering from z=5 to z=0. We use a simple, non-parametric model which monotonically relates galaxy luminosities to the maximum circular velocity of dark matter halos in order to match the halos in simulations with observed galaxies. The simulations and our model predict the shape, amplitude, and luminosity dependence of the two-point correlation function in excellent...

The many lives of AGN: from super-massive black holes to host galaxy colours and luminosities
I use a detailed self-consistent model of galaxy formation and the Millennium Run LCDM N-body simulation to explore the evolution of the galaxy population, including super-massive black hole growth, in a cosmological context. Motivated by observations of local cooling flow systems I propose two modes of AGN activity, the merger driven high energy 'quasar' mode and the quiescent low energy 'radio' mode. I focus on the effect that 'radio' AGN...

A Comprehensive Spitzer Survey of High-z Radio Galaxies
Observational evidence suggests that Radio Galaxies are hosted by massive elliptical galaxies (M_sun=10**[11.5-12]) at every redshift. Using Spitzer we can for the first time measure the peak of the stellar luminosity at rest-frame NIR. From a sample of the 70 most well studied HzRGs we can directly derive their stellar mass from modeling of the SEDs using IRAC and MIPS data, and we find that radio galaxies are indeed hosted by massive galaxies...

Modeling the Martian ozone layer
Ozone (O3) is the most reactive species measured in the Martian atmosphere. Since the first modeling studies carried out in the early 1970s, it has been known that the abundance of ozone on Mars is tightly controlled by the hydrogen radicals produced by the photolysis and oxidation of water vapor. Thus, ozone is a sensitive tracer of the hydrogen photochemistry that stabilizes the Mars CO2 atmosphere. It also provides important information on...

Following the Trail of the Magnetic Field from the Solar Interior Through the Heliosphere
The past decade has seen a wealth of new data from ground and space based Solar observatories. 24/7 monitoring of the full Sun has allowed helioseismologists to determine the temperature, density, equation of state of the solar interior, and velocity structure of the solar interior with high precision. Using tomographic techniques the subsurface layers and the magnetic structures on the backside of the Sun can be imaged. New adaptive mirrors and...

Gas and Dust in Galaxies and Quasars at High redshift
The study of the molecular gas in quasars and submillimeter galaxies at high redshift has significantly progressed during the last few years. From the current detection of CO emission in 38 sources spanning a range in redshift from 1<z<6.4 with, in some cases, the measurement of a series of CO rotational transitions, it is possible to constrain the physical conditions of the massive (>= 10^10 Msol) reservoirs of gas in these objects....

Modeling of Morphology, Composition and Light Scattering Properties of Microscopic Individual Particles in Cometary Coma
Cometary dust environment modeling is an essential tool for the planning of the future operations and the data evaluation of Rosetta and other missions towards comets. Observational and laboratory data indicate that dust particles from comets have an irregular structure and are composed mainly by fine mixtures of organic and silicate components, but the real nature of cometary dust is still elusive. Here we present our investigation about the...

3D Continuum Radiative Transfer: An adaptive grid construction algorithm based on the Monte Carlo method.
The continuum radiative transfer is a common problem in astrophysics that must be solved to describe the physics and interpret observations of objects embedded for instance in a dusty medium. The high angular resolution of present ground-based and space instruments reveal or are expected to reveal complex structures and geometries in astrophysical objects. It is thus necessary to take into account the three spatial dimensions. We chose the Monte...

Cluster Evolution Since z~1
We have used the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the HST to obtain optical imaging of a sample of 7 galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.8<z<1.3. The ACS data provides accurate photometry and the ACS high angular resolution makes it possible to obtain crucial morphological information of the cluster galaxy populations. These data are supported by X-ray observations and by ground based imaging and multi-object spectroscopy. I will...

Rotation Curves of Disk Galaxies at Low and High Redshift
We present results and progress notes from an investigation into the rotation curves of spiral galaxies at high and low redshift. We discuss work done with data from the DEEP2 (Deep Extragalacitc Evolutionary Probe) spectroscopic survey, which is a major effort to characterize galaxies at z~1. A distinct advantage of this survey is the relatively high spatial and spectral resolution of the data, which allows us to measure spatially-resolved...

Asteroid families
Asteroid families are the remnants of catastrophic collisions between asteroids and, so, we should expect a sort of mineralogical coherence among its members. While the dynamics helps us defining the groupings in the space of proper elements, the analysis of the reflectance spectra is currently the main tool to assess the surface mineralogy of asteroids. This kind of information could provide us with information about asteroid interiors,...

Black hole growth: accretion, AGN feedback and black hole mergers
The evolution of a galaxy and its nuclear black hole is now widely thought to be co-eval. The coupling of black hole growth with galaxy evolution is therefore of great interest. This talk will address parts of this issue of black hole growth with emphasis on black hole growth via low-luminosity accretion in "normal" galaxies, AGN feedback as a regulator of black hole mass, and black hole mass growth by accretion vs. black hole mergers...

Inequalities for Relativistic Embeddings in non-compact Kaluza-Klein Theories
In recent years there has been a growing interest in the study of space-times embedded in some higher-dimensional space (see e.g. brane models, induced matter theory, ...). In induced matter theory for example, a space-time is considered to be a hypersurface in a five-dimensional space with vanishing Ricci tensor, such that the fifth variable, i.e. a matter coordinate, is constant on the hypersurface. The theory however provides no way to obtain...

Optical afterglow observations of gamma-ray bursts
Optical afterglows of GRBs provide vital information about the nature of the progenitors and the energetics. Observed achromatic steepening in several optical afterglow light-curves show evidence for the presence of the jet-break, constraining the total output energy. Intrinsic values of spectral indices also indicate towards considerable host galaxy extinction in a few GRBs. Superposed variability in the observed afterglow light curves indicate...

The New Era in Stellar Population Synthesis: Methods & 50362 Applications
The study of the stellar content of distant galaxies has a long and venerable history but, at the same time, something of a 'bad reputation' due to the numerous problems associated with dificulties in disentagling age, metallicity and extinction effects. I'll discuss recent developments in the field. In particular, I'll show how modeling the full spectrum (instead of a handfull of "pet" indices,as I and many others did in the past)...

The quasar spectral energy distribution (SED) in the UV is characterized by a sharp break near 1000 A. The SED (in Fnu) of quasars can be described by a broken powerlaw. Telfer et al. 2002 showed, using a composite quasar spectrum, that the powerlaw index changes from -0.6 in the near UV (longward of 1000 A) to -1.7 in the far-UV. This means that the quasar SED is very soft, which complicates the modeling of the high excitation emission lines...

Solar coronal heating and photospheric magnetic field
The solar coronal heating is one of the most important problem to be solved for the astrophysics. Although it is widely accepted that the magnetic filed emerging from the solar surface plays an essential role for the coronal heating, the detailed mechanism is totally unknown. Fractales y Nubes Interestelares

The legacy of the first stars
The end products of the life of the first stars in the Galaxy are preserved in the most metal-poor stars we see today. A Large Programme of high-resolution spectroscopy at the ESO VLT has enabled us to study the compositon of such stars in unprecedented detail. The results shed new light on both the structure of the first SNe II, the first synthesis of the heavy elements, and the early chemical evolution of the Galaxy.
