SECOND GRANADA WORKSHOP:THE EVOLVING SUN AND ITS INFLUENCE ON PLANETARY ENVIRONMENTSGranada, Spain 18-20 June, 2001 |
||
2001 Workshop Venue: Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía
(IAA).
SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT
An international workshop on the changes of the Sun with time and their
effects on Earth, on the planetary environments and on the development
of life in the Solar System is to be held in Granada, Spain, during June
2001. The primary scientific objectives of the workshop include the changes
in the Sun's total and spectral irradiance from nuclear evolution and from
the decrease of Sun's magnetic activity with time. For example, although
the paleo-Sun was less luminous than now, the young Sun had much stronger
emissions at short wavelengths that arise from enhanced magnetic
activity. The conference will include topics such as the structure
and evolution of the Sun, the solar dynamo and magnetic activity, past
and present solar irradiance, inferring solar behaviour from solar analogs
of different ages, the Sun-climate connection, paleo-climate models, life
in
the Solar System, the Sun and Earth in the future, and new space missions
to study the Sun, planets and extrasolar planets.
This workshop is supported by the Spanish Consejo Superior de Investigaciones
Científicas (CSIC) and the Instituto Nacional de Técnica
Aeroespacial (INTA), through the Instituto de Astrofísica de
Andalucía (Granada) and the Centro de Astrobiología (Madrid).
The purpose of this Second Announcement is to bring further information on the workshop to the attention of the potential participants. Responses to the First Announcement were very satisfactory and we expect to have a very exciting and fruitful meeting.
The scientific preliminary programme and speakers are given in this
announcement as well as further information of interest concerning
registration. The third and final announcement will be released in
April and distributed only to registered participants. Updates and relevant
information will be given in our web page at
(note only one "s" at the end of the web address!!!).

SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES
Our understanding of the formation of planetary systems around solar-type stars, and their evolution, is now being re-examined in light of the many recently discovered extra-solar planets. Moreover, the role of the early Sun's activity and its high-energy radiation on the chemistry of the upper atmospheres of the planets is still also an open issue. The relations between the behaviour of the Sun, and the atmospheres of the planets in the solar system, as well as solar-type stars and extra-solar planets, are crucial problems to study and understand.
Topics so be considered for discussion during the workshop are:
Now is an excellent time to review the problems of solar astronomy,
Sun-Earth connection and evolution as well as the early planetary
atmospheres in preparation for future research activities, cooperation
and projects.
The aim of this workshop in Granada is to facilitate the discussions
and interchanges between scientists involved in the study of the Sun, with
those working in planetary research and climatology to define challenging
new research programmes as well as optimizing the results from future high
resolution space missions.
STRUCTURE
For this purpose, the workshop has been designed to be relatively small in size (compared to usual astronomy meetings) and focused on few talks and as much real discussion as possible. The interaction between members of two different scientific communities, is of very special attention for the Granada workshops.
Formal talks and discussions will only be held during morning sessions.
Afternoons will be left for social activities leading to further informal
discussions (as well as some knowledge of Granada). Invited talks are
organized for the first two days, while discussions, led by one expert,
will be held on Wednesday.
The possibility to present poster papers is nevertheless open to allow
all participants to show their most recent results. Enough space and time
will be available for the posters to be studied and discussed. Both oral
contributions and poster papers, including discussions, will be published.
Details on the preparation of manuscripts for the proceedings will
be given in the final announcement (end April, 2001) as well as in our
web pages.

FURTHER INFORMATION
Granada is a well-known, beautiful city in Southern Spain, 435 km from
Madrid, 256 km from Sevilla and 126 km from Málaga, with a rich
history
and many tourist attractions. The Alhambra Palace and the nearby mountains
of Sierra Nevada are among the most beautiful places in Spain. Granada
has an important influence of its University in the city life (around 50,000
students for a total population of less than 300,000).
The Institute of Astrophysics of Andalucía (IAA) has already
a long tradition despite the relative youth of Spanish Astronomy in the
fields of
observational photometry, instrumentation, galactic structure, radioastronomy,
the study of galaxies and the exploration of the Solar
System. In addition, the IAA operates a modern observatory in the heart
of the Sierra Nevada mountains with two telescopes of 0.9 and 1.5 meters.
The weather in June should be mild, nevertheless bring a jumper for the evenings and some thicker cloths and appropriate shoes those of you wishing to visit the Observatories.
We assume that you will be coming to Spain by plane. If your flight lands in Madrid, you can reach Granada by air, railway or bus.
You can check the timetables and fares at the IBERIA (the Spanish air
carrier) web page http://www.iberia.es.
The flights last approximately 40
minutes. Once in Granada airport you can reach the town by bus (500
pesetas) or taxi (around 2,500 pesetas). There is a bus-stop close to the
Palacio de Congresos (Convention Centre), 200-300 meters from Hotel
Saray.
There are two trains covering daily the route Madrid-Granada. We recommend you the TALGO, which departs from `Estación de Chamartín' (underground station `Chamartín'), north of Madrid, at 8:06 (Saturday) and 15:25 (Sunday to Friday). The journey takes six hours and the fare is around 4,300 pesetas, one way. The second train runs overnight and takes around eight hours to reach Granada. It is a long trip and much more expensive if the ticket includes a bed in a cabin. It departs everyday at 23.00 also from `Estación de Chamartín'. You can check further details in the RENFE (the Spanish railway carrier) web page http://www.renfe.es.
There is a daily service of buses from `Estación Sur' (underground
station `Méndez Álvaro') at 7:30, 8:30, 11:30, 13:30, 15:30,
17:30, 19:30, 23:30,
01:30. The price is around 2,500 pesetas.
If your flight arrives in Málaga, you can rent a car at the airport,
or take a bus in Málaga city centre. Málaga is only 1 hour
45 minutes from
Granada. If you catch the bus, there is one every hour from 7:00 to
22:00, and the price is around 1,400 pesetas. Trains, buses, or taxis are
available from the airport to Málaga bus station. The frequency
of buses and trains is every 30 minutes. The train station adjoins the
bus station
in Malaga.

so that she can make and confirm your reservation.
Payment will be done directly to the hotels. A variety
of lower price hotels is also available in Granada.
FINANTIAL SUPPORT
This workshop is organized with a very reduced budget and therefore
is not intended for a large audience. No financial support is available
for
participants. Nevertheless, we are aware that in exceptional cases
extra funding will be required by some participants in order to be able
to attend
and cover partially their expenses. Please let us know by e-mail (to
ag@laeff.esa.es) whether you would require financial help so that we can
explore some possibilities in our funding agencies but be aware that
we cannot guarantee anything at this stage.
Let us also know as soon as possible whether you need a letter of invitation
to apply for funding in your home institution.
NOTE ALSO THAT...
...during the week previous to this meeting in Granada, the First Eddington
Workshop will be held in the nearby city of Córdoba from 11 to 15
June 2001. (see http://astro.esa.int/SA-general/Projects/Eddington/Eddi2001).
Eddington
is a space mission in the program of ESA for asteroseismology and extrasolar
planet hunting. Transportation from Córdoba to Granada will be provided
for people participating in both events.
