Lyman alpha emission from starburst galaxies

The Lyman alpha line from starburst galaxies presents a variety of profiles that can be understood within the frame-work of massive feedback from star formation. I shall review the observational evidence for different line profiles emanating from galaxies in the nearby Universe and link these to the various stages of the evolution of superbubbles generated by massive stellar clusters. The application to galaxies at large redshift is also thoroughly discussed.
