Over the past few years, the field of star cluster astrophysics has seen a steady rise, and an ever growing number of interested colleagues contributing their research either in peer-reviewed articles, or at conferences (or both!). We have also seen (and participated in or even organised) a number of high-level workshops and conferences on both young and old star clusters, among which two meetings in Chile (Pucon in 2001, Concepcion in 2006), one in Germany (Garching in 2002), and one in Mexico (Cancun in 2003). This shows that the field is very vibrant, and considering the oversubscription rates of most of these conferences, there are usually plenty of new results to report on in any given year. Based on our interest in the broad area of star cluster astrophysics, we have taken the initiative to set up an annual series of workshops (initially to be held alternately in Spain and the UK) addressing science topics relevant to this field. 

The first of these meetings will be a workshop at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Granada (Spain), to be held from Tuesday 11 until Friday 14 September 2007. The dates have been chosen such that the weather in southern Spain will not be too hot for a meeting, while it follows seamlessly onto IAU Symposium 246 (Dynamical Evolution of Dense Stellar Systems, to be held from 5-9 September 2007 in Capri, Italy). The advantage of this would be for participants from further afield to combine attending both meetings while in Europe anyway.

The September 2007 meeting will focus on the young clusters in particular. Topics we propose to include are, broadly speaking, 

1. Formation: individual star clusters - how does a cluster turn gas into stars? what is the IMF (is it universal)? structure? 
2. Formation & Evolution: environment - cluster mass functions,  numbers, properties etc. how do they vary with environment? 
3. Star clusters and the ISM: outflows, HII regions, supershells etc. 
4. Destruction: infant mortality rates, early destruction, tidal  stripping etc. 

We also propose to have a daily discussion session of an hour, at least one of them on what observers would like theorists to tell them and vice-versa. 

Because of the capacity of the auditorium at the IAA, we propose to initially proceed via an invitation-only approach, with possibly a few places kept open for additional participants. The total number of participants foreseen for this meeting is of order 50-60, while we expect presentations to be a minimum of 20+10 minutes each, and 30+15 minutes for reviews.

Logistics

The workshop will be held at the premises of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, Granada.

The IAA has wireless connectivity throughout, so there will be free wireless access for your convenience in the auditorium as well.

Granada can be reached by plane, train, bus or driving your own car. There are several daily flights from Madrid and Barcelona (airport web link), and cheap flights from the UK (London-Standsted, London-Gatwick, Liverpool; with Ryanair and Monarch). The bus trip from Madrid is some 5 hour.
