Curriculum Vitae, a brief statement

CSIC Senior Research Professor since 2017 at the IAA (CSIC). Most of my research work has focused on galaxy evolution, stellar populations, star formation, and nuclear activity in galaxies. For the past seven years, I lead the galaxy evolution group dedicated to the analysis of integral field data of the CALIFA and JPAS surveys. Previously, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the Space Telescope Science Institute (1995-1998, STScI Baltimore), where I started to develop evolutionary synthesis codes, and stellar libraries, and the analysis of Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet and optical data of Starburst and Seyfert galaxies. I did my PhD at Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (1990-1995), studying the connection between star formation and nuclear activity in galaxies with data obtained at Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos. I have worked as visitor in European and American institutions such as Institute of Astronomy (Cambridge, UK), Observatoire de Meudon (Paris), Max Planck Institut für Extraterrestriche Physik (Garching), University of Sheffield (UK), INAOE (Puebla, México), and University of Santa Catarina Florianópolis (Brasil).

I have supervised the PhD thesis of Dr. Muñoz (2011), Dra. Cortijo-Ferrero (Dic. 2015), and López-Fernández (Sep. 2017), and several Master/DAE theses. I have co-supervised the PhD thesis of Dr. Rodríguez-Zaurín (2008, University of Sheffield), Dr. de Amorim (Sept. 2015, University of Santa Catarina).

I have published 160+ papers in journals of high impact (Q1), plus 102+ papers as conference proceedings. I am the first author of 33 Q1 papers. The total citations to these papers are 9700+ (1900+ to first author papers), from the NASA ADS. I have attended international conferences contributing with ~100+ written contributions, given 17+ review/invited talks, plus other 20+ oral contributions. I have also participated as SOC member in 14 international conferences, and as scientific editor of 6 books of proceedings.

I have been member of scientific/evaluation/advisory committees, such as the observing programs for cycle 13 and 16 of the Hubble Space Telescope, the ESO OPC2009, and Calar Alto Observatory (CAHA 2004-2009). I chaired the CAHA TAC committee from 2007 to 2009. I have been involved in international collaboration projects, such as CALIFA, JPAS, Alhambra, GEFE, and LAG, and WEAVE and MEGARA consortions. I was awarded the “Excelent scientific program” funding by “Ciencias sem Fronteiras”, CNPq (Brasil), 2012-2016.

I was member of the Physics board of the Spanish National Evaluation Agency (ANEP) (2010-2013). I chaired the Astrophysics and Space panel, being responsible for the coordination of the evaluation processes of the research projects funded by the ministry MICINN, and the selection of tenure-track candidates RyC and Juan de la Cierva.

Public outreach. I am regularly involved in public outreach activities. Here are some of the last ones:

  1. Coloquios Amigos de Calar Alto, Almería March 2015.

  2. Seminarios Lucas Lara, IAA (CSIC), Granada June 2015. CALIFA: un legado andaluz universal

  3. Paticipation in the multimedia project “Deconstruyendo la luz. CALIFA: El pasado de las galaxias

  4. Paticipation in activities celebrated in the IAA (Granada) during the International Year of Astronomy IYA2009.

  5. Paticipation in events during the Science Week “Semana de la Ciencia” organized by the IAA in Granada.
