International Day of Women and Girls in Science

The Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia joins the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which seeks to make visible the scientific work of women and promote vocations in girls

10/02/2020

At present, women and girls encounter barriers of many types, sometimes very subtle, that hinder their presence in science. This inequality is evident in the choice of studies by girls and is becoming more acute as they advance in scientific and technological careers. With the aim of achieving full and equitable access and participation in science for women and girls, gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, on December 15, 2015 the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed on February 11 of each year as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia has joined this initiative with a series of activities aimed at making visible the work of women scientists, and creating female roles in the fields of science and engineering that promote practices that favor gender equality in the scientific field.

Thus, on February 11 there will be an open day that primary and secondary school students will attend and in which our female researchers, technologists and techniques will present their work.

Finally, projections of the documentary "El enigma Agustina" developed by the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia have been organized in different institutions and educational centers.
