SO Colloquium: Dark and quiet skies

septiembre 25 @ 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

This is the term coined at the first international conference to address the growing threat of satellite megaconstellations. Astronomy requires a dark sky, free from pollutants and radiation. In the best astronomical sites, regulations are already being implemented to protect observational science. In Spain, we were—and continue to be—pioneers in “sky protection” laws.

The uncontrolled development of space technology is confronting us with a new challenge: how to regulate the use of “Outer Space,” a term referring to the region above approximately 100 km, which does not fall under the jurisdiction of individual states. While the issue of local light pollution remains unresolved, we now face the additional threat of contamination from the increasing number of satellites being launched and the radio emissions they use to communicate with Earth.

This debate has reached the United Nations, the only body capable of providing global guidelines. Alongside the protection of science, other key aspects are also at stake: culture, health, the environment, and space security. Progress is more likely if we build arguments that include all these perspectives. For this reason, it is essential to deepen the discussion and develop a sound strategy soon.
