Bodega Los Tintos

After a first day full of talks and discussion we will introduce you to the variety of Spanish wines in a small traditional bar in the heart of Granada, Bodega Los Tintos in Calle San Isidro (close to Corte Ingles). Together with the different wines you will enjoy a variety of tapas, vegeterians will be taken into account.

Excursion to the Alhambra (Wednesday afternoon)

image 1

On Wednesday afternoon we will organize a visit to the famous Alhambra and Generalife palaces, built by the Arabs in the 14th century, including an older fortress and a newer Renaissance palace. Since the number of visitors per day for the Palacio de Nazaríes (the most beautiful Arab part) is limited, please tell us with the registration if you are interested to join. The price is 14.30€ p.P.
In case you have already seen it, you have the afternoon for yourself or we can give you some recommendations what else to see in Granada.

Workshop dinner (Thursday evening)

Restaurante "La Fabula"

The workshop dinner will take place at Granadas probably most exclusive restaurant, La Fabula, situated in the ground floor of the Hotel "Villa Oniria" in the center of Granada. The kitchen is building on traditional Spanish dishes including some techniques from molecular cuisine. Prepare yourself for an exceptional workshop dinner at Michelinstar level brought to you by chef Ismael Delgado López. We hope you (and we) won't be disappointed. Vegeterians will enjoy their own carefully prepared menu.

Recommendations for bars and restaurants

All restaurants are marked in the map. We'll give you a printout of the list and the map at the workshop.

Lunch bars and cafeterias (all close to the institute)
  • Donde Siempre: lunch menu for 8.50€ (3 dishes, drink and bread), half menu 6.50€ (2 dishes), sandwiches
  • La Gracia de Dios: bakery, toasts of different breads, good coffee, pastry
  • El Rodri: bar, toasts, coffee
  • El Meson de Juan Ramos: seafood, slightly higher priced
  • El Labrador: lunch menu, roscas (round sandwiches)
  • Raices: vegetarian

Restaurants and bars for the evening
The following list only includes a few personal recommendations, there are probably more than a thousand bars in Granada. As a general rule, avoid the tourist traps, especially in the center (a good indication are large advertisements in several languages).
Bars in Granada always serve a tapa with the drink until midnight. A bar that does not serve you anything else than a few olives is per definition a bad bar and a tourist trap, leave after the first drink! In many places nowadays you can choose the tapa (if you are a larger group, usually 2-3 varieties per table), in some you just get what they have. In most places, you are fine for dinner with 3 drinks and the corresponding tapas, if you are still hungry, ask for a "ración" of something (like a larger tapa) in addition.
If you have dinner in a bar or bar/restaurant, it's recommended to order several things and share them on your table. Some places have separate parts for the bar serving tapas and raciones and for having "real" dinner. Vegeterian options in Spain are in general somewhat limited, below we list a few places tested by people from the institute. We also recommend you to try one of the many Arabian tea places ("tetería") in and towards Albaicín, some of them also serve food and/or pasteries.

  • La Quintanilla (C/Andres Segovia, near the institute): tapas bar
  • El Romero (C/Primavera, near the institute): tapas to choose, has seen better days, cheap
  • La Platea (across the Forum round tower): fancy tapas and raciones
  • Oleum, Gastrobar (Calle San Antón): tapas and raciones
  • La Trastienda (C/Cuchilleros, near Plaza Nueva): cold meat and cheese plates, the restaurant is behind a small shop counter.
  • Los Diamantes: seafood bar, good price, several locations in Granada (center: Plaza Nueva, C/Navas, C/Rosario, Zaidin: C/Torre de Peralada)
  • La Ninfa (Realejo, Campo de Príncipe): bar with tapas and pizza
  • Calle Navas: Popular street with a lot of restaurants of varying quality. Recommended are Los Diamantes and El Fogon de Galícia (both seafood).
  • Calle Elvira: Another popular street with bars, very touristy, most places are ok but nothing spectaculard
  • Meson de Gregorio (very near Hotel Basilios): seafood restaurant
  • Los Damasqueros (Realejo, C/Damasqueros): upscale restaurant, personally tested and recommended (menu 40€, with wine 60€)
  • Alacena de la Monja (Realejo, Plaza del Padre Suárez): another fancy restaurant
  • Non-Spanish restaurants
    • Zakuro: Best Sushi/Japanese place in town (confirmed by a Japanese), not cheap for Granada but good quality
    • Samarkanda (Calderería Vieja, off C/Elvira towards Albaicín): Lebanese
    • Arrayanes (Cuesta Maranas, off C/Elvira, close to Samarkanda): Moroccian, does not serve alcohol
    • Las Villas (near the institute): Italian
    • Pizzametro (C/Gran Capitan, at the northern end of the centre): Italian, original Neapolitanian pizza
  • Teterías
    • Las Cuevas (Cuesta de San Gregorio at a small square, off C/Elvira): Tea and Moroccian food
    • Dar Ziryab (same street): Teas and Arabian sweets
    • La tetería del Bañuelo (C/Bañuelos, in Albaicín): Teas, sweets and milkshakes

Vegetarian bars and restaurants
Here you find a page in English which dishes on non-vegeterian menus are suited for vegeterians as well as some vegeterian restaurants in Granada. Another list of vegeterian/vegan and vegeterian friendly places is this. The teterías and Arab restaurants listed above are also a good option for vegetarians. Below is a small selection:
  • Mundo Manila (Plaza de las Descalzas, near Plaza Nueva): hip vegeterian tapas bar with good beer selection
  • Hikuri (C/Santa Escolastica): vegan
  • Páprika (Cuesta de Abarqueros, at the northern end of Calle Elvira): vegan
