Travel to Granada

Flights

Granada has its own airport, Federico Garcia Lorca Granada-Jaén (GRX) , mostly serving flights from Madrid and Barcelona. Interntional flights are only available from London city. Your best option is to fly with Iberia or Vueling to Madrid or Barcelona and pick the connecting flight to Granada. Make sure you have enough time at the stopover.
You can also fly to Malaga - Costa del Sol (AGP) which has plently of direct European connections, somewhat depending on the season. Currently there are direct flights to Copenhague (Norwegian), Paris (Air Europa/AF), Amsterdam (KLM), London Gatwick and Stansted and several others.
The probably cheapest, but most inconvenient, arrival is by plane to Madrid and continue with the bus to Granada (19€ in the basic bus, 5h) since many airlines have cheap tickets between major cities in Europe and Madrid.

Arrival from the airport

From Granada airport

There is a bus leaving after every flight with the final stop at the "Palacio de Congresos" (very near the hotels, see hotel page), fare 3€. The schedule for busses back to the airport is to the right. More info on the airport bus can be found here . The ride takes almost 1h despite the short distance, so if you are in a hurry or lazy, take a taxi instead (30-35€, 20min).

From Malaga airport

There are two direct busses per day from the airport to the bus station in Granada, the price is 13.71€. If there is no convenient bus available, you can take a bus to Malaga centre from which there are busses leaving to Granada almost every hour. Be careful for very late arrivals or very early departures, busses do not go 24h, you might have to spend the night in Malaga!
The schedules for Sunday the 16th and Saturday the 22nd both from/to the airport and Malaga bus station are to the right, for other days please consult this page. For those busses leaving from Malaga center, there are busses, line A (indicative schedule to the right) as well as suburban trains to the city centre that leave every 20-30min. Exact information on the stops will follow later.
Busses arrive at the main bus station in Granada ("estación de autobuses"), from there take bus 3 to Palacio de Congresos, or 33 which arrives at the other side of the Genil river (see below "transport in Granada"). Alternatively, you can also take a taxi.

From Madrid (Barajas)

There is only one direct bus from Barajas to Granada per day. Usually you have to take the metro to "Avenida Sur", the main bus station, from which there are hourly busses to Granada (again, be careful with early and late flights). Those busses also arrive to the main bus station in Granada. Tickets should be purchased in advance as they occasionally can be sold out but this is somehow risky due to the unreliability of Iberia. Also, tickets can likely not be purchased with foreign credit cards. If you vote for that option, please contact us.

Transport in Granada

Granada has an extensive and cheap bus system (fare 1.20€ per ride) but is lacking a proper schedule. Busses leave "every x minutes" so one always ends up to wait x-1 minutes for the next bus. Within the centre, we recommend to walk and only take the bus to destinations at the other side of the city. The bus plan is shown on the right. Tickets are purchased directly in the bus at the driver. Taxis within the city are also relatively cheap (5-10€ per ride).
The recommended hotels are within walking distance of the institute as is the conference dinner. For the Alhambra visit you can take a bus from the centre or walk. Further info will be provided in the "Social" page.
